First of all, by giving the patients emotional support, the family assure them with concern and love. Secondly, be a good listener, even the stroke patient could have lost the ability to speak, and an active listening ear is very necessary and useful. Being firm with the patients’ recovery programme as the patient should learn to be as independent as possible. The last but not the least is to be a link. Accompany the patient on outings and to the shops, participate with the patient in relevant activities, the family can better help the patient back to social life and activities.

However, as same as the patient, the family is also experiencing a hard battle. The victims of stroke are not the only ones who must deal with the devastating consequences of this condition; their families also do as well. The role of the spouse and children are now changed and everyone may be involved in nursing duties. The family may also go through the same reactions that the patient goes through. As a family member, it’s more important to take care of yourself first and not hesitate to get support from other people.
